After a loved one passes away, the beneficiaries of that person’s life insurance policy need to know how to collect the life insurance and social security payments that they are entitled to. This is one task that the executor of the estate does not take care of because the executor is not involved in the policy. The individual listed on the life insurance policy is responsible for going to or contacting the company that the life insurance policy was purchased through to claim the benefits.
Submitting a life insurance claim
Once you have determined that the life insurance policy was active at the time of death and who the beneficiaries are, you will need to contact the company’s local agent or check their website for paperwork to file a claim. You will need to submit the claim along with a certified copy of the death receipt. Some life insurance companies check deaths on a monthly basis and will send you an information packet with paperwork as well. If the life insurance policy has more than one beneficiary on it, then all eligible beneficiaries need to submit an individual claim.
